55 already! How did that happen?

When I was really young I wanted to be older, then as I got older I wished I was younger and now I am much older I’m passed caring!

Anyway, according to Joseph Pilates I am still a teenager:

“We retire too early and we die too young, our prime of life should be in the 70’s and old age should not come until we are almost 100.”

So, today is my birthday and I am 55 years young.  When I say the number 55, it feels strange to have lived that long yet still feel thirty-something or even younger. I have absolutely no intention of growing old – my motto is to live agelessly and not to be defined by a number.

My daughter, who has a wicked sense of humour told me “age is just a number, but the higher numbers closely correlate with death.” Unfazed, I reminded her that I have hardly any wrinkles or grey hairs and can still do the splits (on a good day) and that she should be grateful she has my genes.

I do think it’s wonderful to celebrate the day you were born. For me, it is about paying homage to my wonderful mother who is now on the other side. It’s also about celebrating smiles, laughter, family, friendships and fun.

Gratitude is key. I am still alive, healthy and happy. I have a wonderful family, incredible friends, amazing clients and an adorable cat. I truly love my job – helping people to develop a love for pilates and empower their lives.

As we enter a new season, now is a good time to reflect on the year to date. Celebrate your achievements, and re-look at what you’d hoped to have achieved, reassess and draw up a plan and take action. Remember, you still have time to accomplish your 2017 goals.

Here are my 9 top tips for promoting well-being and making you feel special everyday, as well as on your birthday (however young you may be):

  1. Start the day early to prepare and embrace all the goodness that lies ahead;
  2. Meditate;
  3. Exercise;
  4. Surround yourself with people you can laugh with;
  5. Eat without guilt;
  6. Dance to your favourite music;
  7. Sing your heart out;
  8. Hug the people close to you (especially as you accept presents);
  9. Wear something that makes you feel good and enjoy looking fabulous.

Of course, there will always be the usual mundane things to do – dishes to wash, clothes to launder and bills to pay but today is my special day and I’m choosing to immerse myself in love, joy and cuddles.
